The story
What is going on in the Christmas Woodland village?
In Christmas Woodland, one small village runs the length of the wall, and the animals in it have jobs rather than costumes. An owl reads Winter Tales aloud to a mouse and a squirrel, a fox pulls a sledge home through the snow, and a fox and a rabbit cross a stone bridge together. Further along, a raccoon balances on a wooden ladder stringing berry garland through bare branches, a badger posts his letter to Santa while a robin watches from the postbox, and a bear sells roasted chestnuts and hot apple cider from a lantern-lit cart.
The rest of the village keeps a daytime pace. A bakery, a toy workshop, a post office stacked with letters to Santa and a gingerbread stall each get their own scene, and elsewhere the animals skate, sled and decorate a tree together. A family bakes at a long table by a wreath window, and a snowy church and lit cottages appear further along.

And what happens once the lanterns come on?
By evening the cream snow grounds go dark and lantern gold does the lighting. Star lanterns, cocoa stands and carol books turn up among the scenes, a steam train pulls into Pinewood Station, and the night sky above the pines fills with stars and a run of northern lights. Santa turns up more than once across the set.
On the night before Christmas the village gathers round a campfire by the sleigh hill; in a separate print Santa hands out presents beside a Merry Christmas sign. The earlier scenes stay soft and gouache-like against a cream snow ground; the night scenes are more saturated, lantern gold and evergreen deepened by the dark around them.
